To: Dave Kenagy From: Jay Helms Dave, I am so impressed with the fantastic trip you and your bros have planned for your dad. That's just so incredible!!! We should all be so lucky as to have that to look forward to for our 80th!!! Please give him my best. Speaking of adventures, one secret ambition: I have always wanted to plant a flag (or something) somewhere where no man has gone before. I think our best shot is one of those many islands in 1000 island. (If you bring your raft?) Hope to be sharing fish, stories, fish stories, and lots of good times with you around the campfire! Best to you, Beth, & the gang

From: David R. Kenagy To: Jay Helms Jay, I love your idea of getting out to one of the islands. I can imagine the careful preparation of a group time capsule being a part of the landing party festivities. Didn't Waters have some sort of time capsule fetish last summer? He could make us up a great capsule and we could bury it on the island...after we name the island something obscene or at least disgusting. There is a little lake near Black Butte ranch called Island Lake. It has only one island as the name might suggest. My son Tim and I have been on it and I can report that there is something really fun about setting aground on a little island in a high mountain lake. When I consider the idea of doing it on 1000 Island, it is awesome. We really could do some great exploring. Thanks for all your effort at making the Sierra trip a reality. All the best, Dave K |

To: Dave Kenagy From: Jay Helms Dave - We definitely MUST press Russ into service and pursue your time capsule idea when you (for the raft), Russ (for the capsule), and I (for ballast) can all be together again. Let's hope for Summer 2000. As always, Jay |

To: Dave Kenagy From: Jay Helms Cc: Russell Waters, John Grant How did the trip with your dad go? Inspired by his example at 80 (or at least buoyed by the prospect of reliable equine transport) I think a grand Time Cap opening in 2020 on "Île des Pétomanes" would be quite a prospect. This is great...though summer's on the wane, we already have a superb adventure to look forward to! Jay |

To: Jay Helms From: Russell Waters Cc: Dave Kenagy, John Grant we must remember we are limited on size ....and it should be sealed before we leave home ....for best protection! |

To: Dave Kenagy From: Jay Helms Dave, Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Hey, last summer you proposed the great idea of planting a time capsule on an island in Thousand Island Lake. One further reflection, I think this is not only a wonderful idea, but that 2000 is the MUST-DO year! Several reasons: first, word is that we will have record attendance next summer...just about everyone who has ever been on one of these trips seems likely to come. We need to plant the capsule when everyone can be there to make the retrieval as meaningful as possible. Second, I was thinking about how long the time capsule should stay in the ground and I think 10 years is too short, and anything more than 20 is, well, a bit too long. But to reasonably envision getting back to the lake for the recovery mission 20 years hence, we need to do it right away! (Tick, tick...) Third, there's something nice about planting it in 2000, on the 30th reunion trip, and looking forward to a recovery in 2020...which would be our (gulp...) 50th reunion. Pretty awesome...something like an alignment of the stars... Anyway, as the holidays and the rains of winter close in, I thought I would send out an email to everyone telling them about our scheme so they can be thinking about what they would put in the capsule. Also looking for suggestions on how to structure this. The vision of you and Tim landing on that island in Island Lake got my imagination running wild...can you imagine our group of maybe a dozen setting foot and flag ... and time capsule ... on an island in the middle of Thousand Island Lake? Best, Jay |

From: Scott Cook To: Jay Helms I'd go for 20 years (we'll be young at 68) and let individual creativity drive what each selects to be entombed. scott |

From: John Selling To: Jay Helms Thanks for the info Jay. I think we should dig up the capsule every 10 years and add to it. It's a great idea. I think I still have a raft. John S. |
